The American League batting race ended with New York's Kirby Puckett on top with a .323 average. The Mets center fielder was officially named the winner today.

For the season he totaled 30 hits, 2 home runs with 14 RBIs and 14 runs scored. At the award ceremony Puckett told reporters the key to his hitting success this season. "I stayed focused and tried to get a hit in every at-bat."
