Baltimore Blanks Mets, Cordova at His Best
Saturday, September 20th, 1969
The New York Mets had no answer today for Baltimore Orioles pitcher Francisco Cordova. They failed to score a single run against him, losing 3-0. New York managed only 6 hits off Cordova, who had 3 strikeouts.
The extraordinarily popular Cordova got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.
"Orioles fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."
So far this year Cordova has a 12-6 record with a 3.22 ERA.
