Pirates Trip Cardinals in Extras
|
The Pittsburgh Pirates topped the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-8, in National League action at Busch Stadium. The player of the game was Pittsburgh third baseman Richie Hebner. Stan Thomas got the save, his 4th in 5 chances. Pittsburgh leads the National League Right by 2 games.
The game was at a stalemate until right fielder Gates Brown came to bat in the top of the 13th. Facing St. Louis pitcher Hal Kelleher, he hit a first pitch curveball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Pittsburgh on top, 9-8.
"I still think this team has room for improvement," Brown told the Pittsburgh Daily News.
