Red Sox Stymie Detroit, Take 2-0 Win
|
The rain at Fenway Park did not keep Boston and Detroit from finishing their game.
In a tight battle between the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers, pitcher Clayton Richard was in the zone. The Boston left-hander was named the player of the game in Boston's 2-0 win. Richard picked up the win for Boston, going 5.2 innings. He gave up no runs on 5 hits. He now sports a record of 9-9. Pedro J Martinez was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 13 of 18 save opportunities.
Bobby Murcer, who finished 2nd in the NL in wins above replacement with 6.3 in 1954, aided the Boston cause with a run-scoring ground out in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the shortstop went 1 for 2 with 2 walks.
"I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Murcer.
The Red Sox bumped their record to 58-54 with this latest triumph.
