The Yankees had to overcome a fine effort from Brooklyn pitcher John D'Acquisto to grab a narrow 2-1 win at Yankee Stadium I. D'Acquisto went 8 innings and allowed no earned runs. Luis Aquino got the save, his 3rd in 3 chances. The Yankees bumped their record to 56-52 with this latest triumph.
Whitey Wietelmann had a big run-scoring single for the Yankees in the bottom of the first inning. With Bronx leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a fastball from John D'Acquisto and stroked the single to center. It was his 60th hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Yankees ahead, 2-0.
"We'll enjoy this win for now, but it's just one," Wietelmann told local reporters. "We've got to keep it going."
