Despite a fine performance by first baseman Eric Karros, the New York Mets suffered a 5-4 loss to the Bronx Yankees. Karros was 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Bronx reliever Don Mossi picked up the win to move to 2-3. Chad Gaudin suffered the loss. Bronx goes to 54-48. The win puts them 3 games up in their division.
Bronx used a timely hit from Reggie Smith to get the win. The center fielder delivered a run-scoring triple in the top of the ninth inning to put the Yankees on top, 5-4. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Bronx manager Cley Twigg.
