Pirates Solve Tigers, 6-3
|
A 4-RBI performance from center fielder Johnny Groth, who finished 3rd in the AL in batting average with .322 in 1965, led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-3 win over the Detroit Tigers. Cloyd Boyer earned the win to go to 1-0. He allowed 3 earned runs on 7 hits, with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. Darren Holmes, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 1st save.
With Pittsburgh leading 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Groth hit a changeup from Aaron Harang for a grand slam home run. It was his 2nd home run of the season and put the Pirates ahead, 6-0.
"Good baseball players make you a smarter manager," said Pittsburgh manager Cory Einhorn.
The win brings the Pirates to 6-4, a promising start as the team looks to return to the playoffs.
