Mets Sneak Past Yankees, 7-6
|
The Mets had to overcome a good performance from Bronx pitcher Jim Hickey to claim a 7-6 win at Yankee Stadium I. Hickey went 7 innings and allowed 1 earned run. New York reliever Tom Butters picked up the win, upping his record to 2-0. Mitch Williams shouldered the loss. The Yankees fall to 4-6 and continue their uneasy start to the 1969 season.
It could have been a different outcome for New York, had it not been for Kevin Baez, the 22-year old shortstop . Baez contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the 11th inning to put New York up, 7-6.
"This is a resilient bunch," said New York manager Jamie Dagostini.
