Royals, Sanders Pin Bad Loss on Pirates
|
The Kansas City Royals handed the Pittsburgh Pirates a sound defeat, 11-2, at Kauffman Stadium. Deion Sanders was a main contributor to the win. He was 2-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3 for Kansas City. Sheldon Burnside, the winner, improved to 2-2. He held the Pirates to 2 earned runs on 3 hits over 5.1 innings, while striking out 4 and walking 2. Matt Hensley, credited with the save, is now 5 for 5 in save opportunities.
Darrell Porter, who finished 4th in the AL in batting average with .297 in 1964, contributed to the Kansas City win with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the eighth. For the game, the catcher had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 3 runs batted in.
"It was a solid team effort and we'll try to keep this momentum going," Porter told reporters after the game.
The third-place Royals improved to 35-53.
