Crowds lined up early in front of PNC Park, eagerly awaiting the start of the 1969 Fellowship of Respect and Trust season. On the mound was Denny McLain for the visiting Montreal Expos and James Paxton for the hometown Pittsburgh Pirates. In a spirited contest, the Expos pulled out the win, defeating the Pirates by the score of 4-3. Earning player of the game honors was James Paxton. The win was Phil Collins's in relief. His record improves to 1-0. James Paxton took the loss for Pittsburgh.
Montreal used the timely hitting of Miguel Cabrera to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the third inning to put the Expos on top, 2-0. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"It was a solid team effort," said Cabrera after the game.
