Mets Clip Dodgers, 6-5
|
Bill Bean did all he could to help his team win. In the end, though, it wasn't enough to keep the Brooklyn Dodgers from losing, 6-5, to the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. Bean was 3-3 with 3 singles and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Tom Butters got credit for the win, improving to 5-3. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 1 innings. Tim Stoddard, credited with the save, is now 2 for 2 in save opportunities.
Josh Willingham went 1 for 3, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for New York. The three-time All-Star had a key at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and the bases loaded, he broke a 5-5 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Mike Smithson. It was his 51st RBI of the season.
"Our guys are never satisfied," said New York manager Jamie Dagostini.
New York is now 52-34, 7½ games up in the American League Up.
