The Boston Red Sox knocked off the Montreal Expos, 8-3, at La Stade Olympique. Vern Stephens, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason Boston won. The second baseman was 2-3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Sean West got the win, improving to 7-6. He held the Expos to 1 earned run on 4 hits over 6.1 innings, while striking out 4 and walking 3. The second-place Red Sox lifted their record to 37-38.

Boston used the bat of Dale Long to get the win. The first baseman hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Red Sox ahead, 5-1. It was his lone hit in 5 at-bats, but it did its damage.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Long.
