Red Sox Subdue South Side, 5-3
|
Boston played host to South Side at the friendly confines of Fenway Park.
The Boston Red Sox defeated the South Side White Sox, 5-3, at Fenway Park. Vern Stephens was named player of the game for Boston. His 2 hits included 1 single and 1 double, in addition to the 1 run he scored and 1 he knocked in. Boston reliever Doug Waechter picked up the win to move to 3-4. Mace Brown suffered the loss.
The Red Sox got a big at-bat from right fielder Jayson Werth. For the game, Werth went 2-4 with 2 singles. In the bottom of the fifth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 41st hit of the season gave Boston a 4-3 lead.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Werth. "And not try to do too much."
The Red Sox bumped their record to 28-25 with this latest triumph.
