Cardinals Lose to Marlins, 8-5
|
The Miami Marlins defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-5. Earning player of the game honors was shortstop Luis Ordaz, who was 3-5 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Charley Schanz, the winner, improved to 2-4. He held the Cardinals to 3 earned runs on 5 hits over 5 innings, while striking out 1 and walking 2. Warren Brusstar earned the save for Miami, his 4th.
Miami used the timely hitting of Ivan Calderon to seize the win. The left fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the first inning to put the Marlins on top, 1-0. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We need to string a few more wins like this one together," said Calderon.
Miami is last in the American League Down with a record of 16-26.
