4-2 Yankees Win over Tigers Evens Season Record
|
The Bronx Yankees knocked off the Detroit Tigers, 4-2, at Yankee Stadium I. Reggie Smith, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason Bronx won. The center fielder went 3 for 3 with 3 singles and a walk. Kerry Wood got the win, improving to 3-3. He worked 5.1 innings, giving up 1 run on 5 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 4. Don Mossi closed the door for Bronx, picking up his 7th save of the year.
Stan Musial had a big run-scoring double for the Yankees in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Bronx leading 2-1 and a runner on 2nd, he got a curveball from Frank Eufemia and stroked the double to left. It was his 5th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Yankees ahead, 3-1.
"Credit where credit is due," said Musial, "this was a team win."
Bronx is in second place in the American League Down with a record of 18-18.
