Pirates Lose, 8-2, at Shea Stadium
The New York Mets topped the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-2, with first baseman Eric Karros playing a big role. Karros went 2-4 with a home run. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3 for the Mets in the win. Vincent Velasquez was the winner. Over 6.2 innings, he allowed 1 run on 5 hits, with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. The Mets bumped their record to 23-13 with this latest triumph.

With New York leading 2-1 in the bottom of the third, Karros hit a curveball from Randy Wolf for a 3-run home run. It was his 5th home run of the season and put the Mets ahead, 5-1.

"We cashed in when we had the chance," said New York manager Jamie Dagostini.
