Cubs Even With Pirates After Extra-Innings Win
|
The Chicago Cubs got a strong game from starter Kyle Gibson, but it was some clutch hitting that ultimately delivered the win.
The Cubs took the 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in Game 2 of the Divisional Series in a 12th inning walk-off today. The win capped off a fine outing for the right-handed Gibson, who was named player of the game. Gibson threw 7 innings of 5-hit ball in the win, which brought the Cubs into a 1-1 tie in the best-of-7 series.
The game was at a stalemate until designated hitter Gleyber Torres came to bat in the bottom of the 12th. Facing Pittsburgh pitcher Ricky Bottalico, he hit a 1-1 fastball for a solo home run. It was a game-changer, putting Chicago on top, 3-2.
"By the skin of our teeth, man," Torres told the Chicago Gazette. "But hey, it still counts. A few more by the skin of our teeth is fine with me."
The next game is set to be played Friday in Pittsburgh. Slated to start are Chris Haney for Chicago and Hal Brown for Pittsburgh.
