When he got to New York, Matt Garza was just worrying about staying on the roster. Today, he was starring in the League Championship Series.

The 21-year-old rookie right-hander shut out the visiting Boston Red Sox 3-0 in a remarkable performance at Shea Stadium today. With the win, the Mets took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 League Championship Series.

Jose Ramirez, who finished 2nd in the NL in stolen bases with 29 in 1960, chipped in for New York with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the second baseman had 2 hits in 3 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 2 RBI.

"I like how we're playing right now," said Ramirez.

The next game is set to be played Tuesday at Fenway Park in Boston. The scheduled starters for the game are Jay Tibbs for the New York Mets and Al Shealy for the the Boston Red Sox.
