Yankees Turn Back St. Louis, 8-7
|
The Bronx Yankees had to overcome a big game from St. Louis left fielder Albert Pujols to leave Busch Stadium with a 8-7 victory. Pujols went 3-5 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. The win was credited to Bartolo Colon in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Jack Hallett took the loss. Jose Mijares, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 3rd save.
Bronx used the timely hitting of J T Realmuto to seize the win. The catcher stroked a 2-run single in the top of the second inning to put the Yankees on top, 7-4. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
In postgame comments to the Bronx Daily News, Realmuto said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
The Cardinals drop to 15-16 and continue their inconsistent start to the 1969 season.
