Yankees Lose to Red Sox, 7-4
|
The Boston Red Sox defeated the Bronx Yankees, 7-4. Earning player of the game honors was third baseman Steve Braun, who went 2-4 with a home run, a double, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. Boston reliever George Mohart was the winner. His record is now 6-2. The losing pitcher was Luis Aquino. The first-place Red Sox, at 88-74, now lead their division by 6 games.
A crucial at-bat came with a runner on 1st and no one out in the top of the seventh inning. That's when designated hitter Johnny Rizzo, who led the AL in RBI with 117 in 1963, hit a single. The Red Sox went on to win.
"We'll enjoy this win," said Rizzo. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."
