Pirates Subdue Colorado, 5-3
|
Two good teams met in a late-season showdown at PNC Park.
The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Colorado Rockies, 5-3, in National League action at PNC Park, with Pittsburgh pitcher James Paxton named player of the game. Paxton, now 17-5, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 9 hits, while striking out 6, walking 1, and allowing 2 earned runs. Darren Holmes, credited with the save, is now 14 for 23 in save opportunities.
The Pirates got a big at-bat from right fielder Tony Conigliaro. For the game, Conigliaro went 1 for 4 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the first, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 14th home run of the season gave Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead.
"We'll enjoy this win for now, but it's just one," Conigliaro told local reporters. "We've got to keep it going."
The Pirates bumped their record to 93-63 with this latest triumph.
