The Pittsburgh Pirates got a stellar effort from pitcher James Paxton, helping Pittsburgh score a 5-2 win over the visiting Colorado Rockies. Darren Holmes got credit for the win, improving to 3-0. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2.1 innings. The Pirates, now 14-7, have been red hot.
Had Tony Conigliaro not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Conigliaro hit a bases-clearing double. That made the score 5-2, in favor of the Pirates.
"It was just a matter of executing," said Pittsburgh manager Cory Einhorn.
