The Colorado Rockies trumped the Boston Red Sox, 9-7, at Astrodome. Colorado designated hitter Lonnie Smith was named player of the game for his performance. He went 2 for 5 with a home run and a triple. He drove in 5 runs and scored once. The win was credited to Bob Bruce in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Tyler Anderson took the loss. The Red Sox fall to 7-9 and continue their lackluster start in 1969.

Smith had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the sixth. On a 0-1 fastball from Tyler Anderson, he banged a 3-run home run to left, giving the Rockies a 9-7 lead. It was the 2nd home run of the year for Smith.

In postgame comments to the Colorado Bulletin, Smith said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
