Mets Score Late, Stun Marlins, 3-2
|
Miami got a terrific performance from pitcher Charley Schanz, but it wasn't enough to beat the New York Mets. New York won the Turner Field contest, 3-2. Schanz was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 7 innings of 3-hit ball. New York reliever Al Hrabosky picked up the win, upping his record to 8-7. Warren Brusstar took the loss. New York improves to 95-56 with the win. They lead their division by 5 games.
New York used the timely hitting of Bob Elliott to seize the win. The right fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Mets on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"We'll enjoy this win," said Elliott. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."
