Puckett belts 2 home runs, Mets Move to 89-53
|
New York center fielder Kirby Puckett played a vital role in his team's 6-5 triumph over Brooklyn. He hit 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice for New York. The winner was New York reliever Severino Gonzalez, now 1-0. The loser was Tex Shirley. New York leads the American League Up by 6½ games.
Puckett had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the seventh. On a 1-2 curveball from Tex Shirley, he banged a 2-run home run to left, giving the Mets a 6-5 lead. It was the 15th home run of the year for Puckett.
"Chalk one up for the good guys," said Puckett. "I'm sure our fans enjoyed that win."
