Brooklyn got a terrific performance from pitcher Jimmie Keenan, but it wasn't enough to beat the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis won the Ebbets Field contest, 4-1. Keenan was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings of 4-hit ball. St. Louis reliever Hal Kelleher got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Mike A Anderson was tagged with the loss. With the win, St. Louis boosts its record to 1-1.
St. Louis used the bat of Yulieski Gurriel to get the win. The first baseman hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the 11th inning to put the Cardinals ahead, 4-1. It was his lone hit in 5 at-bats, but it did its damage.
"We played a good game and came out on top," said Gurriel.
