Stephens Excels in Boston Win
|
The Boston Red Sox beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 15-5, at PNC Park. The Red Sox got a fine performance from second baseman Vern Stephens, who captured player of the game honors. He was 2 for 5 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 6. Doug Waechter, credited with the win, is now 5-6. He allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 6.1 innings. At 69-65, the Red Sox have a slim two-game lead in the American League Down.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the third, with the game tied, Dale Long was at the plate when Boston scored 2 on an error. The miscue enabled the Red Sox to go in front, 2-0.
"You know, at the end of the day, it's about who scores the most runs," said Boston manager Daniel Hornbaker.
