Royals Lose to Cubs, 5-4
|
Chicago beat Kansas City at Wrigley Field, eking out a 5-4 win. The win was due in large part to third baseman Tony Piet, who earned player of the game honors. Tim Wakefield got the win, improving to 11-5. He worked 7.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 12 and walking 1. Pedro Feliciano got the save, his 14th in 17 chances.
Piet had a big at-bat with a runner on 1st in the bottom of the second inning, when he hit a 2-run home run. The Cubs went on to win.
"I like our mindset right now," said Chicago manager Matt Ida.
The Cubs, at 80-48, have a comfortable 22½-game lead in their division.
