The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Mets, 7-6. Earning player of the game honors was third baseman Albert Pujols, who was 3-5 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. Ed Correa got the win, improving to 6-13. He held the Mets to 3 earned runs on 5 hits over 6.2 innings, while striking out 14 and walking 4. Frank Carpin earned his 6th save in 8 chances.
Pujols came through with some timely hitting for St. Louis. With the score 0-0 in the top of the fourth and no one down, Pujols hit a 0-2 screwball for a solo home run. His 20th home run of the season made it 1-0, St. Louis.
