The first-place New York Mets welcomed St. Louis to Shea Stadium.

New York got a strong outing from Jay Tibbs as the Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-1, at Shea Stadium. New York leads the American League Up by 12 games.

Marlon Byrd had a big 2-run single for the Mets in the bottom of the first inning. With New York leading 1-0 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a cutter from John Lackey and stroked the single to center. It was his 68th hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Mets ahead, 3-0.

Said losing manager Doug Morton: "Give the Mets credit. They took advantage of our mistakes."
