National League Top Rookie Announced
Sunday, November 11th , 2001
2001 was a much better year than Jake Early expected. This spring he was overjoyed at just making the St. Louis roster. Not only did he make the team, he was the starting catcher. Then it got even better.

In his debut season, Early hit .282 with 125 hits in 444 at-bats, 27 home runs, 86 RBIs, 40 bases on balls and a .341 on-base percentage -- good enough numbers to be honored with the National League Rookie of the Year Award.

He received 1 first place votes out of a possible 2. Brett Tomko of the Arizona Diamondbacks finished second in voting with 1 first place vote, while Pat Kelly of the Chicago (N) Cubs finished third.
