Ken Howell was a calming influence out of the Philadelphia Phillies bullpen this season.

His teammates and manager said he had a poised demeanor about him that was typical of someone much older and more experienced. His poise has paid off, as the 24-year-old turned in a sparkling season and has been named the winner of the National League Reliever of the Year Award for 2001.

The Detroit, Michigan native won the award with 38 saves in 58 relief appearances, 63 strikeouts in 58.2 innings and a record of 5-4 to go with his 2.30 ERA.

He received 1 first place votes out of a possible 2. Jay Powell of the New York (N) Mets finished second in voting with 1 first place vote, while Dave Veres of the Arizona Diamondbacks finished third.
