Montreal Dealt 4-2 Defeat
The Philadelphia Phillies topped the Montreal Expos, 4-2, in National League action at Veterans Stadium. The standout performance belonged to Philadelphia pitcher and Brookline, Massachusetts, native Joe Johnson. Ken Howell notched his 21st save in 22 chances. The win gives Philadelphia a season record of 47-43.

Philadelphia took a 3-2 lead on Dale Murphy's 1st home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which Murphy hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Montreal pitcher Jonathan Broxton visibly frustrated.

Murphy called the win "a collective effort."
