Mets Use Late Score to Top Marlins, 4-3
|
The Miami Marlins could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Boom-Boom Beck into a win. Instead, the New York (N) Mets prevailed, 4-3, in 10 innings. Beck threw 5.1 innings of 4-hit ball. The winner was New York (N) reliever Jay Powell, now 4-0. The loser was J.P. Howell. New York (N) improves to 62-21 with the win. They lead their division by 12½ games.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Jeff Kent? The former first round draft pick Kent stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the tenth inning to put New York (N) up, 4-3. For the game, he was 2 for 5, including 1 double and 1 single.
Kent called the win "a pick-me-upper."
