Giants Need Extra Frames to Get Past Cardinals
St. Louis shortstop John Valentin was sensational. He belted 2 home runs, while adding 6 RBI and scoring twice. But it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. San Francisco beat the Cardinals, 13-9. The win went to Chris Stratton in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Bucky Brandon took the loss. This loss makes it 6 in a row for St. Louis.

Ed Stroud drove in one run for San Francisco. The 28-year old center fielder had a key at-bat in the top of the tenth. With one out and the bases loaded, he broke a 9-9 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Bucky Brandon. It was his 4th RBI of the season.

In postgame comments, Stroud said he was glad to contribute to an exciting win.
