Mets Top Cardinals, 1-0
|
The New York (N) Mets took Chris George's best shot and still were able to collect a win at Shea Stadium. The final score had New York (N) getting past the Cardinals, 1-0, in 11 innings. George over 9 innings allowed no runs on 4 hits, while striking out 10. New York (N) reliever Bill Gogolewski picked up the win, raising his record to 1-1. Joe Genewich was tagged with the loss. New York (N) is now 55-20, 10 games up in the National League.
New York (N) got a knockout punch from Mike Schmidt. The third baseman hammered a solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to win the game. It might've been his only hit, but it decided the outcome.
During his postgame press conference, Mets manager Jamie Dagostini told reporters that he expected a tight game from the get-go. "This had the potential to go down to the wire, and it certainly didn't disappoint," he said, later quipping, "it might've been a little less nerve-racking if I had been watching the game from my couch!"
