Rangers Sneak Past Astros, 7-6
|
The Houston Astros could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Brandon Backe into a win. Instead, the Texas Rangers prevailed, 7-6. Backe threw 5.2 innings of shutout ball. The winner was Jesse Litsch, who threw 96 pitches over 7.2 innings. The right-hander was charged with 6 runs on 9 hits. With the win over Houston, the Rangers improved to 29-40.
The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Luis Valbuena came to bat in the top of the eighth. Facing Houston pitcher Robert Carson, he hit a 2-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Texas on top, 6-5.
"In baseball, you have your ups and downs," said Houston manager Claybor Finley. "You just try to stay level-headed the whole time."
