Behind a fine performance from Mike Schmidt, the New York (N) Mets knocked off the San Francisco Giants, 8-6. Schmidt was 2-4 with a home run, a double, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for the Mets. The Mets improved to a lofty 42-17.

The Mets got a big hit from catcher Charlie Moore. Facing San Francisco pitcher John Candelaria in the bottom of the fifth, Moore pounded a 2-run home run to left-center. His 2nd home run of the season put the Mets ahead, 7-1.

"We've got a great group of guys," Schmidt said, "and we're having fun right now."
