Mariners Nudge Past Expos, 5-4
|
Al Simmons made an impact in the 5-4 Seattle win over Montreal. Simmons, who led the AL in hits with 229 in 1998, was 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Rocky Coppinger, who finished 3rd in the AL in saves with 31 in 1999, was the winner in relief. His record is now 2-0. The losing pitcher was Danny Patterson. Earning his 13th save for Seattle was Bobby Jenks.
Seattle used the timely hitting of Glenn Wright to seize the win. The designated hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Mariners on top, 5-4. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Seattle manager Tyler Jorgensen.
The defeat makes Montreal 29-21.
