Montreal Loss Diminishes Mathews Performance
|
Despite a fine performance by third baseman Eddie Mathews, the Montreal Expos lost to the New York (N) Mets, 8-7. Mathews went 3 for 3 with 2 home runs, a walk, and was hit by a pitch. He scored 3 runs and drove in 4. Jay Powell locked down his 1st save. New York (N), with the win, is 4-1.
Had Beau Bell not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Bell hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 8-7, in favor of the Mets.
"You need to show up when your number's called," said Bell.
