Cardinals Slap 5-1 Loss on New York (N)
|
The St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York (N) Mets, 5-1, at Busch Stadium. Starting pitcher Milo Candini was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. The winning pitcher was Candini, now 4-5. He tossed 6.1 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 9. Earning his 2nd save for St. Louis was Kyle Gibson.
John Valentin had a big run-scoring double for the Cardinals in the bottom of the fifth inning. With St. Louis leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a splitter from Cory Bailey, who finished 2nd in the NL in saves with 35 in 1991, and swatted a double to left. It was his 4th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Cardinals ahead, 2-0.
Candini attributed the win to his team's "hyper resolve."
The Cardinals raised their record to 14-25.
