Guardians Lose, 5-4, in 11
|
The Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Guardians, 5-4, in 11 innings at Tiger Stadium. Detroit second baseman Delino DeShields had an outstanding performance. He went 2-5 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 4. Sean Burnett, credited with the win in relief, is now 1-0. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 0.2 innings. Cleveland now owns a losing streak of 5 games.
The game was decided with two out in the bottom of the 11th. With Detroit trailing 4-2, DeShields jumped on a sinker from 26-year old right-handed pitcher Cecil Upshaw and hit a 3-run home run to left. With one swing, the Tigers had a walk-off win.
"The fans went nuts at the end," DeShields said.
