Astros Defeat Mets, 5-4
|
The Houston Astros picked up a win at Shea Stadium, knocking off the New York (N) Mets, 5-4, in 11 innings. On the mound for Houston was right-hander Brandon Backe. He played a pivotal role in the triumph. Houston reliever Blake Parker picked up the win, upping his record to 1-1. Bill Gogolewski took the loss. Ed Carroll earned the save for Houston, his 1st of the year.
Houston needed the clutch hitting of Joe Orsulak to seal the deal. The center fielder swatted a solo home run in the top of the 11th inning to put the Astros on top, 4-3. For the game, Orsulak had 1 home run and 1 single in 3 at-bats.
"This kind of game is tough on the heart," said winning manager Claybor Finley.
After today's action, Houston sits at 17-18, while New York (N) falls to 29-5.
