Eddie Mathews impressed in the 8-4 Montreal win over St. Louis. Mathews, who finished 2nd in the NL in home runs with 45 in 1997, went 3-5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. St. Louis is 1-2 after the loss.

The Expos got a big hit from catcher Todd Hundley. In the top of the sixth, Hundley smacked a 2-run home run off St. Louis pitcher Johnny Welch. It was his 2nd home run of the season. Suddenly, the Expos were ahead, 5-4.
