Cubs Top Yankees, 4-2
|
Extra innings were needed to determine a winner at Yankee Stadium.
The Chicago (N) Cubs picked up a win at Yankee Stadium, downing the New York (A) Yankees, 4-2, in 13 innings. On the mound for Chicago (N) was left-hander Kirk Rueter, who played a pivotal role in the win. Reliever Nub Kleinke picked up the win. His record improves to 1-2. Dave Von Ohlen, who was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1997 draft, took the loss.
Chicago (N) used the timely hitting of Billy Burns to seize the win. The designated hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the 13th inning to put the Cubs on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 6 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Bottom line," said New York (A) skipper Brett Fogerson, "we didn't play well enough to win."
The Cubs improved to 64-73.
