Expos Prevail, 4-3, Over Philadelphia
|
The Montreal Expos topped the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-3, with center fielder Brett Gardner playing a big role. Gardner was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 for the Expos in the win. Ben Sheets, the winning pitcher, is now 4-3. He went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, while fanning 3 and walking 3. With the win, the Expos hiked their record to 85-46.
John Hale had a big 2-run double for the Expos in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Montreal leading 2-1 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a slider from Jose Rijo, who finished 2nd in the NL in strikeouts with 196 in 1997, and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 30th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Expos ahead, 4-1.
"It's nice to come out on top today," said Hale.
