Yankees Nip Rangers, 6-5
|
The New York (A) Yankees trumped the Texas Rangers, 6-5, at Yankee Stadium. New York (A) center fielder Barney McCosky was terrific. He was 3 for 4 with 3 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Ed Head earned the win for New York (A). He lasted 7.1 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 5. With the win, he raised his record to 7-12. New York (A) now sports a record of 64-67.
Red Nonnenkamp had a big solo home run for the Yankees in the bottom of the sixth inning. With New York (A) leading 5-4 and the bases empty, he got a fastball from Don Durham, who is tied for 8th in the AL in strikeouts with 141, and swatted a home run to left. It was his 6th home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Yankees ahead, 6-4.
"It was a solid team effort," said McCosky after the game.
