Mariners Tuck Away 3-2 Win Over St. Louis
|
The Seattle Mariners earned a close win over the St. Louis Cardinals, thanks in part to Andy Benes. The Seattle right-hander, who led the AL in strikeouts with 238 last year, played a key role in the 3-2 victory. In 6.1 innings, Benes surrendered 4 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 4. He allowed 2 runs. Bobby Jenks closed out the game, earning his 4th save.
Ted Kluszewski had a big run-scoring double for the Mariners in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Seattle leading 2-1 and a runner on 2nd, he got a fastball from Chris George and swatted a double to center. It was his 5th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Mariners ahead, 3-1.
Kluszewski called the win a testament to his team's "grit."
St. Louis, now 3-10, continues its tough start.
