Cardinals Drop Mets, 5-4
|
St. Louis beat New York (N) at Shea Stadium, eking out a 5-4 win. The win was due in large part to shortstop John Valentin. He was 2-3 with a home run and a walk. Jeff Suppan earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. He upped his record to 3-1. Kyle Gibson converted his 3rd save in 8 tries.
Charlie Keller drove in one run for St. Louis. The 21-year old right fielder had a key at-bat in the top of the fourth. With one out and the bases loaded, he broke a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring ground out off Chris Holt. It was his 20th RBI of the season.
"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Valentin told the St. Louis News.
The win has St. Louis at 42-78.
