Brewers Reel Off Another Win
The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-3, in part because of first baseman George Scott. Scott went 3 for 4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 for the Brewers. Pete Smith, the 16th overall pick in the 1998 draft, was the winning pitcher. Over 6.1 innings, he allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. The Cardinals, now 3-9, continue their slow start.

Dale Murphy had a big run-scoring double for the Brewers in the bottom of the third inning. With Milwaukee leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a fastball from Johnny Welch, who finished 3rd in the NL in innings pitched with 229.2 last year, and swatted a double to center. It was his 3rd double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Brewers ahead, 2-0.

"We cashed in when we had the chance," said Milwaukee manager Mike Ejercito.
